Buxton Well Dressing Festival has been cancelled for this year as the coronavirus crisis continues.

Organisers of the annual event, which has been running for 180 years this year, made the announcement tonight.

Posting on Facebook, they said: “It is with great sadness that we have to make the following announcement:-

“The Buxton Well Dressing Festival organising committee have decided to cancel this year’s festival that was due run between 5th to 12th July 2020. In the light of coronavirus, and the uncertainty this creates, we have decided to cease preparations to avoid unnecessary expenditure.

Buxton Well Dressing Festival, which incorporates the annual Buxton Carnival, is one of the town’s biggest events of the year, drawing people from around the area and beyond.

Coronavirus has already led to the cancellation of Buxton International Festival and Buxton Spring Fair. International quarrying exhibition Hillhead, which was due to take place in June, has also been postponed to 2021.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Health Secretary Matt Hancock have both tested positive for coronavirus it has been announced today, while Chief Medical Officer Chris Witty is self-isolating with possible symptoms.

According to the latest figures, there are more than 14,500 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK and at least 759 people have died.
