These poignant pictures show the moment a newborn Buxton baby is introduced to its family under social distancing rules.

Olivia Leah Layton - born on April 25 at Stepping Hill Hospital weighing 8lb 4oz - is shown cradled in dad Nick Layton’s arms as she meets great grandmother Jean Layton.

Jean can be seen smiling through the window of her Buxton flat as grandson Nick, 24, shows off his bundle of joy.

Another photo shows Nick in the first-floor window of his home with Olivia while his brother Anthony, 27, holds up six-month-old son Ted.

Project manager Nick told how after six weeks of going through the later stages of fiance Libby Addy’s pregnancy during lockdown the quirky new arrival photo felt like ‘the new norm’.

However he added: “You do expect lots of visitors and have to do visits like in the photo we took of my brother - through the window.

“Or people come to see us and stand at the bottom of our garden.”

Nick - who had brought a move back home to Buxton from Cheltenham to start a new job forward due to the Covid-19 crisis - described the experience as ‘surreal’.

He added: “Because we had so much to do we didn’t really have time to think ‘now we have to have a baby in these circumstances’.”

Olivia’s grandmother Ellen Williamson, 55, told how she had not cuddled grandson Ted since February and her only glimpse of new arrival Olivia was through the window outside Nick’s flat.

She said: “If we got the virus we wouldn’t want to pass it on to the babies – but there are a lot of granddads and grandmas out there in the same situation at the moment.

“But despite what’s happening I’m absolutely delighted - we’ve had boys on my side of the family for ages and this is one of the few girls for 35 years almost.”

Speaking about Nick and Libby’s baby girl former nurse Ellen added ‘they just got on with it and are both really happy - but Libby did say she couldn’t have done it without Nick’.
